Its Hideous!
A woman was stabbed 20 times by her ex-lover, because he was a drug addict, unemployed and she refused to marry him. Here is the link to the article by the "Times Of India". That is majorly the storyline of an event that greatly disturbed me!
Every now and then we hear stories of people (women) being raped and killed for various reasons. Its not funny and more so it is alarmingly disgusting. Even if we do accept the unacceptable and must-be-changed fact that the society is sexist (at least in India) it is unacceptable that anyone can play God because they are male and decide to end women's life.
The entire image of India being a culture haven and being diverse is being washed away. As races we might still be sort of split into three or more, but as cultures we are definitely coming together into one nutshell. (Just like America, where despite the South Americans and the British whites and the Afro-Americans everyone is very similar.) And that is doing more harm than just uniting the country.
It is undeniable that people still hate each other based on ethnicity and race and region of living, but if you look at the "hate" it is similar to the sort of hate other people feel (all based on race, sex, age, ethnicity, etc...) People not only hate each other but also wish to murder one another, case in point as mentioned above.
Another attribute that grows all over the country is the idea of being horny! A major portion of people in the country are extremely horny. Sex is all they want and perhaps that is one reason of the high rate of domestic violence in the country, the high rape rate and as pointed out through the above instance high forced-marriage rate. Another reason why marriage becomes important here is, that because of the power religion has in the country, that people do not want to have sex before marriage. The misconception of sex being a crime before marriage is what highlights illiteracy and high dependence on religion. However, to have sex or not is entirely a choice and before or after marriage it most definitely cannot be forced.
All of this adds up to a lot of politics and flaws in the Indian system, but what I feel is most responsible is the genre of entertainment people of India get these days.
I would first start with movies, the number of movies show-casing and revolving around sex and murder is increasingly high! In movies, there are people shown having sex, women being forced to make out, men beating up other people and more often than not it is the central protagonist who is doing all of this...be it eve-teasing or bare hand fighting or beating up someone for money. While all of this is vulgar and still accepted by the Censor Board it in a way "O.K.'s" it for the general audience, if the hero (as the actors are referred) is doing it and getting away from the law...we can do it too! is what seems to be in mind of the audience. If the actors do it for money, we should too! if he kills people and the police do not do anything to him, we can do it too!
This hyper-reality of movies that people want to make their lives into is something that causes major amounts of problems, apart from violence these movies also showcase the act of sex and in ways more than one, encourage it. Taking the example of a Children's film "Toonpur Ka Superhero" made by Indian Film-makers, the film had obscene characters, slutty bikini-clad women trying to get the actor into their pants. Huge aunties with a full visible cleavage at show. Women degraded in the animated form, not very far away from a porn movie (perhaps animated) if that is the case of our "Children's Movies" there is hardly any point discussing the ADULT movies.
Coming to music and music videos made in India, despite music being centralised towards the movies, the video and lyrics of a song have a huge impact. Songs off late have been absolutely about sex, getting men, prostitution, getting drunk and pole dancing. No actress has stripped to bare minimum for a song termed "Item Songs", because most producers rely on these sex-showcasing music and music videos, to excite the sex-hungry audience to watch their "porn" and "Violent" movies.Every movie has to have an "Item Song" no matter what...it is what makes the movie worth watching.
Art - although in India art is not so important, consider posters of television series and movies as arts...and all you will again see is sexually exciting pictures of women in compromising positions.
Even short advertisements that are aired at all times of the day have sexually degrading pictures of women and men...especially deodorant advertisements that air every five minutes!!!!
All of this building up of excitement for the sex-deprived dominant males of a country leads to results as mentioned earlier. And thus everywhere there is a parade of horny men being formed who follow any means to re-stablish their power over the females and take revenge or action against females.
